One of the problems with being a football fanatic is understanding the right time to stop talking about about your team. Though I love the Cougs, I don't want to be a one dimensional 31 year old man-child, so I force myself during the off-season to explore other interests. Like staring at the wall waiting for football season to begin.
Personally, I start the ritual of silence a few weeks into January and hold steady through February—just in time for the lead up conversations that take us into Spring ball. After April and the spring scrimmage it's hard to get much satisfaction from football conversations as all of the talk on message boards and in the media go from absurd to ridiculous. It's all just guess-work and dream scenarios before fall ball.
"What if they move Riley to running back, Heaps to Head Coach, and Bronco to QB? Wouldn't that flippin' rock?!"
Yes, but the very fact that we're discussing such absurd "what ifs" is a clue to how boring baseball is. Is it August yet?
Yes. Yes. It is finally appropriate to once again discuss BYU football without sounding pathetic. And not a moment too soon.
So welcome back, Self-Righteous Readers! Let the great debates begin!
Who should start, Heaps, Riley....Bronco?
We have much to discuss and only 25 days to decide how the season is going to play out. Let us begin!
I really wanted Jake to start at the beginning, but from what I'm reading online, Riley is keeping his own in camp. I'd really like to see both of them in action before I opine. Someone must go to the practice this friday and return to report (preferably with video)!!! I'm so excited I might turn inside out!
ReplyDeleteAlso, I'm impressed that you were able to contain yourself for so long, Joe. Especially with this overly-eventful offseason. My only hope is that this won't be the last year for a meaningful rivalry game. But that's another topic.
Gregan, wonderful to see you on!
ReplyDeleteMy thoughts on the QB situation: If it's nearing a tie on ability between Jake and Riley, we go with Jake. Get him in there early and let him take the reigns as a freshman. Riley is a Junior and it's my thinking that if a Junior can't separate himself from a true freshman, perhaps he hasn't much room to improve.
Until a few weeks ago I was in favor of having Jake's legs amputated and replaced with Riley's, and Ty Detmer's experience instilled in Jake's brain, and then putting Brad Pitt's face on Jake's new body, with Gerard Butler's accent, and that's who you start- in my dreams!
ReplyDeleteReally though- and I never thought I would ever say this- I think I would be ok with starting the season playing both. However, if they do that, I hope they do it somewhat strategically, like inserting Riley in the blue zone, like how the Utes used- what's his name from a couple of years ago? Or even a few times during the middle of a drive in short yardage situations. I'm just not fond of the alternating series idea. And the longer we get into the season, the more I would favor going with Jake (provided he has moved the offense at least as well as Riley).
The Yewt you're thinking of is Louks (sp), and I hated when that guy ran on to the field. Hopefully Riley would have the same effect in your scenario—only with Rosie O'Donnell's thighs and Janet Reno's hair.
